Rigid Pavement Repairs at a Cement Factory

GPS-mapped survey and reinforced concrete repairs of a heavy-duty factory road, with traffic diverted to avoid production downtime.

Work performed

  • Road survey and inspection of damage severity
  • Demolition of affected sections
  • Backfilling, compaction and reinforced concrete

Scope

The main road into a cement factory in Zimbabwe had deteriorated, with many potholes making it difficult for drivers to manoeuvre around the plant. Years of sedimentation had blocked most of the stormwater drains, causing ponding on the pavement. The client asked TALOS to carry out isolated repairs.

Access

TALOS engineers carried out a visual inspection and GPS mapping of the damage, showing which sections required immediate attention and which would need attention in the future.

Solution

Once the client approved the mapped repairs, traffic was redirected to alternative routes so production and distribution continued without downtime. The marked areas were demolished with breakers and jack hammers and the waste removed; where needed, sections were backfilled with approved gravel and compacted to a bearing capacity suitable for heavy plant machinery. High-grade reinforced concrete was used to make the repairs durable.

Results

The project was completed successfully, on time and safely, improving vehicle safety and extending the life of the road. TALOS also addressed the root cause by clearing the drains to restore efficient stormwater flow.
