Work performed
- Assessment of the severity of the cracking
- Development and execution of the optimum repair
Scope
The concrete housing of a raw mill bucket elevator (RMBE) is a key element that is often overlooked as long as the elevator works. Thermal expansion, environmental factors and continuous vibration crack the precast concrete panels, creating the risk of pieces falling into the elevator cavity — or outside, where people walk.
Access
TALOS engineers and the HSE department specialize in rigging, work at height and access to hard-to-reach environments. Here a scaffolding tower was erected to reach the area of concern, with anchors tied to the existing structure to ensure its stability.
Solution
After cracks were identified on the elevator housing, TALOS performed a thorough visual inspection and developed tailor-made remedial repairs. The work area was isolated and barricaded, and the surfaces were cleaned of dust and debris. Deep cracking and delamination indicated that continuous vibration was the main cause.
All visible cracks were repaired with special crack grout, and angle irons were anchored into the concrete panels at intervals and fixed to the frame at the edges.
Results
The custom-engineered concrete repairs were completed safely and successfully. Structures subjected to continuous vibration need periodic inspection and maintenance, so that deterioration is detected early and repaired efficiently.
